Gospel Reflections for October 18 2026
Your Sunday faith …and the rest of the week
Jesus speaks about paying taxes using Roman coins to the Emperor Caesar.
He affirms that Caesar’s image on the coin shows a kind of ownership, so that coin rightly belongs to Caesar. Jesus then says, Give back to Caesar what belongs to Caesar …and give to God what belongs to God.
This sounds like a reasonable separation of your life into worldly concerns and religious concerns. There is time for religion, as on Sunday, and a time for daily concerns the rest of the week. But how would people then have understood His words?
They would instantly remember the creation story in Genesis, where every person is made …in the image of God!
You are a kind of coin made in the image of God. You belong to Him! Your entire self: your mind, heart, and soul belong entirely to God, 100% of the time. Remember that you did not cause yourself to be born …so clearly God is in charge!
It means there is no time that you are not made in His image of love and freedom …and in every relationship too. When you leave your spouse to go to work …you do not stop being married! When your children go off to school, you do not stop being a parent. Your love continues.
In the same way, when you leave Mass on Sunday you cannot be without faith on Monday. Your life must have a single focus about faith and love …wherever you are.
I also have that single focus to help you here at St. Bruno. This week we introduce a new link on our website where you can provide for your family in very meaningful ways, by writing a moral Healthcare Directive when you become sick, by creating a Will for when your life is over, and even Planning Your Funeral. (see the Catholic Legacy link at stbrunochurch.org)
It can also help you provide for your parish family with renewed financial support for our new Parish Hall. This Hall will provide so many wonderful activities every day for our school students, with classes, basketball, and volleyball games, and also host funeral receptions, theatrical productions, concerts, banquets, and bible studies. It is a HALL for ALL!
Jesus affirms your life must have a single faith filled purpose, and not distracted by anything else. I hope you will visit our new website link and …Give to God what belongs to God.
God Bless!
Fr. Dave
