Gospel Reflections for May 17 2020

Gospel Reflections for May 17 2020

What’s going on?

The Gospel today speaks about knowing Jesus and the goodness you will feel from that personal experience. The Gospel also talks about knowing what is going on in the world right now …and the cure.

When news of the virus first happened, there was widespread interest in knowing what it was and how it spread, especially since it was a “novel” virus and unlike others before.

Medical scientists in every medical laboratory throughout the world began to pool their research as fast as possible to know everything about it. That mission has largely been accomplished.

The next mission is to develop vaccines and other safe medical treatments to end it. They are now in trials and will hopefully be available soon.

Now there is intense interest in knowing the foreign origin of the virus. Did it happen by accident in China or by some evil human purpose? No answers there yet but the search continues.

All of these efforts showcase the very best in human nature. People recognize a threat and quickly and accurately try to know everything about it. People then use their knowledge to discover a remedy that will end it for good.

This virus was new but what has been around for a long time is sin, and the selfishness that can bring so much sadness to people’s lives. Jesus knows this problem better than anyone.

He also knows the cure and He showed that cure on the cross, when He offered His life in complete unselfish and total unconditional love for you. He continues to show that love for you at every Mass.

We know that one day the virus will disappear as all viruses do. Sin unfortunately will remain, and so you must never lose sight of Jesus, the Good Doctor, who knows sin and how to treat that problem!

During this pandemic time you have seen the very best in this unselfish human love, in the care of medical workers and others in essential services, and also the very worst in those who perhaps made this foreign crisis even happen at all.

So what is going on? Sin will always be in our world, and may sometimes even tragically spread fast, but what you have right now is the instant cure for your soul in the person of Jesus, and His love for you that you can freely accept, and that makes all things new.

God Bless!

Life is full of surprises both good and bad, but this pandemic left us scrambling
for an answer! It was frightening that the whole world became infected
    so quickly.

Only with the Lord and us helping each other can we expect a resolution for the good of all.
We pray for His guidance for a better tomorrow.
