Gospel Reflections for June 21 2020
Know the right person!
This is just the right Gospel for Father’s Day.
Many experts now claim to have just the right answers for racism, policing, or Coronavirus solutions. All claim to have the true source of wisdom.
I remember years ago I had dinner with my father at a restaurant that we used to enjoy regularly but had not visited for a while. When we walked in, the manager looked up and said, “Welcome back! It is so good to see you again!” He then led us to a great table by a large window with a beautiful view outside. The waiter was especially helpful and we had a delicious meal. (It helps to know the right person) On the way out, as I passed the manager, he looked up and said, “Come back soon, Fr. Murphy!”
It’s amusing when we think we are connecting with someone only to find out it is actually someone else. While it doesn’t make much difference in a restaurant, it is crucial now to connect with just the right person in our faith for the problems you face.
Mothers and fathers worry about who their teenagers connect with on social media. Voters want to know who politicians really are inside. We all need to know more about activists and their claims about social justice today. Who can you really know and trust?
Today’s Gospel affirms that Jesus knows you very well …even the hairs on your head are counted. He knows what you have endured during this shutdown time as well.
The Disciples ask about trust in today’s Gospel and Jesus affirms He is that reliable person because He is one with His Father in Heaven. His resurrection was proof that everything He ever said and did was authentically from God, and that His life is the right path to happiness and peace.
We are just now slowly returning to Mass, the place you can connect with the authentic person of Jesus, and in the way that He designed, in the Scriptures and the Eucharist.
If you have been looking anywhere else for wisdom, now is a good time to return to this true authentic faith. There is no more reliable and trustworthy place to be.
Our Lord is always happy to welcome you back, and you can be sure He knows your right name and who you are!
God Bless!
