Gospel Reflections for June 16 2024
The smallest of seeds becomes…
This Gospel is good news, especially if you need wisdom and strength to face some challenge.
When this Gospel was written, the number of Christians in the whole world was just a few thousand. It was very small. There were no parishes, Catholic schools or universities, or any programs at all. There was just the Mass. A lot has happened since them, which is this Gospel’s theme.
Jesus knew that the small church in Jerusalem would be like a mustard seed, the smallest of all seeds but that also grows into the largest of all plants. That happened. Within a few generations, most of the Roman Empire joined the Church!
Jesus knew that His mission of salvation would plant itself in people everywhere and blossom into the worldwide Church that Catholicism is today, with over 1.4 billion people …and still growing.
He adds the beautiful image of all kinds of birds of the air find nesting in its branches meaning that all kinds of people flying by or searching for meaning would recognize this is the place where they could land and find a peaceful home. What a perfect image of a parish as Jesus intends it to be!
The person of Jesus reaches every culture and person around the world. No one can impact us more deeply than Our Lord, who is from God the Father who created us all.
The mission of every parish today is to be that place where you meet the Lord, no matter what your situation, and find a meaningful and peaceful home in His arms.
When the doors open for Mass, all kinds of people come in …long time devout Catholics, people who know little of our faith, people returning after a long absence, and even skeptics.
I wrote a two-page card placed in our church pews called, What Happens at Mass. I hope it can help all kinds of people be on the same page about the Mass. That is what grew the Church, just as Our Lord intended.
Today is Father’s Day. We remember the example of Joseph, who provided a peaceful home for Mary and Jesus. The Church that Jesus founded is our home where we find the wisdom and strength to face every challenge.
God Bless!
