Gospel Reflections for January 27 2019
University Series and School Open House
Around this time every year you will hear a State of the Union Address where every President reveals their hopes for the future.
In today’s Gospel, Jesus delivers His own Address, and reveals amazing things He had already accomplished! He brought “Glad tidings to the poor, Liberty to captives, and Recovery of sight to the blind.” Since that time, the Church has happily followed His plan …and with great success!
Catholic Hospitals today are the largest private healthcare system in the US, and Catholic Schools are the largest private educational system. The Church worldwide operates more than 140,000 schools, 10,000 orphanages, 5,000 hospitals and some 16,000 other health clinics making the Catholic Church the biggest aid agency in the world!
All of this is provided entirely by donations from people like yourself. You can be proud to be a part of this amazing worldwide outreach! You have helped to make great things happen.
We teach these values here at every Catholic school, along with science, mathematics, history, and languages. However, we add one subject that public schools cannot. We study the person of Jesus, who first gave that speech years ago, and inspired all of these amazing projects.
This weekend begins Catholic Schools Week. I invite you to visit your own parish school classrooms and meet your school staff. We are always proud to showcase our exceptional Catholic educational facilities.
This weekend, we present our 2019 University Series Catalogs. It offers over 150 sessions that connect our faith with real life. We have over 70 sessions in five parishes in the Whittier area and 85 sessions in 13 parishes in Ventura County.
You can also register online at theuniversityseries.org. Your entry fee also lets you bring any guest for free!
We are proud to showcase all our parish schools and our University Series program. Children can learn about Jesus, and adults can learn about our faith in settings that offer great insights and welcomes all your questions, so that your every need is met, just as Our Lord spoke about in His amazing speech in today’s Gospel.
God Bless!

When Jesus read rhis scripture He was very brave to proclaim what He proclaimed in the synagog. I love the way He always spoke truth and never worried about the outcome.. we are called to evangelise and bring people to the faith. We have to look into our own hearts as to why we don’t. It could be fear of rejection.. i think the best way to fight that fear is to just speak out and give it to the Lord.
I also like the Epistle which teaches us not to judge others and how they are used in the body of Christ..

Dear Father Dave,
Many thanks for your enlightening message on the scope of Catholic institutions worldwide. I had no idea they were so far reaching. When I looked at the force and energy behind those numbers, it buoyed my spirit and intellect. Quite seriously, I really felt uplifted. In a way, it reminded me of my young summer teen years at the Jersey shore when those perfect waves (while body surfing) carried me all the way into shore.
Such exhilaration!
Such is the way of Jesus with His exhilaration to carry us into heaven.
Father Dave, thank you so much for starting The University Series, and congratulations on its continued, incredible success. It’s safe to say that we know the source of your inspiration.
God bless you.
Sincerely,
Kathleen
