Gospel Reflections for February 12 2017
The power to do something good
Every year, and only once a year, we change the size of St. Bruno parish.
Every other week, our parish includes just the Whittier area, so our programs make Jesus present mainly to the 3,000 families here. We know there are many who could use a deeper relationship with Our Lord, or might need some extra help, or some advice about some difficult relationships. Everything we do at St. Bruno parish is meant to help you meet the Lord. When that meeting happens, good things happen.
This week, our parish will grow to the size of the entire Archdiocese of Los Angeles. It will include Santa Barbara, Ventura, and Los Angeles counties. This week, our concern and care reaches out to families everywhere.
The program that helps them is called Together in Mission. If you have already received your envelope in the mail, I hope you have already responded. If not, you are welcome to do so at this Mass.
We know that those three counties include many families who struggle under intense hardship. This is the one time each year when our concern reaches past St. Bruno parish and includes our fellow Catholics for whom their parish school would not happen if not for your help, or even their Sunday Mass if not for your donations.
Money is power. For Catholics, money is the power to do something good. I am sure you do many good things all year long for your family or for yourself. You are blessed for that! Today we consider the size of our family and our parish as so much larger in size.
Together-in-Mission is a very well run and efficient collection for poorer Catholic parishes and schools. For a few years, I used to be part of its management team, and I know, by law, the money can only be used for those poorer parishes. I know some of the pastors in those areas too, and know their parishes would not survive without this collection. Together, we will ensure that every Catholic family will be able to attend Sunday Mass, maybe even attend Catholic school, and always receive the care that comes from being in our large Catholic family.
May God bless you for all that you do for your family, and the larger family that surrounds us.
God Bless!
