Gospel for August 10 2025 – Luke 12:35-40
Surprise return!
How would you feel if Our Lord came for your life right now? Nervous? Anxious? Surprised?
This Gospel is not meant to cause fear but rather to instill greater confidence and peace. Recognizing you will not live forever helps you value the days you have now …and value your family and friends even more.
Jesus tells the story of a master and servant, and a sudden return home, a clear reminder that your life may come to a surprise end that you did not expect.
It may be a health crisis, or worse, the result of crime or war. While health problems are natural events, crime is not. I am sure innocent crime victims did not expect it when they started their day.
From Satan’s temptation of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, we know we still live in a world where there are selfish people who put their needs over others. However, their selfishness must never cause you to change the path of Christ you have chosen, which is always a path of love.
Each day you have important family routines, household chores, job expectations, and friendships to maintain. If you are organized you might make a list each day for these tasks.
Today’s Gospel invites you add key ideas to your list.
Always keep your relationship with God current and on a daily basis. Talk with Him every day and especially throughout the day. Always take care of your relationships with your loved ones too. Never let a day go by where you do not express your love to them and to God.
Finally, you should never let selfish people change your commitment to love. They have chosen their selfish path. You must daily choose your path of love no matter what others do.
This Gospel is about the return of Jesus. Well, Jesus actually returns to you at every Mass in communion! That is why after receiving communion you should immediately kneel or sit in private contemplation of Jesus who has just come into your heart. Pray about how your life will be different now because He is within you.
If your after-communion prayer inspires you to love every day, then you will enjoy your life now, and greet the coming of Jesus both at Mass and at the end of your life with confidence, peace, and joy. No surprises!
God Bless!
Fr. Dave
