Gospel Reflections for April 12 2020

Contagion vs. Cure

Almost all of the news you hear today about the Covid-19 event is about contagion, and how easily the virus can spread from one person to another.

That is why you have practiced all these restrictions. You stay in place, keep your space, wash your hands, and don’t touch your face.

These behaviors are called “mitigation” events that help slow the spread of the virus. You hear them every day. No one needs to be reminded how fast this virus can spread.

Holy Week reminds you of another Covid-19 issue, and that is finding a cure.

If there’s a cure then it doesn’t matter how many are infected, since they will soon be healed.

All fears about contagion and getting the virus go away. Finding a cure changes everything!

Holy Week is precisely about a cure …for a contagious attack on your heart and soul.

At the time of Jesus, no one needed to be reminded how easily sin and evil can spread. Evil is contagious and can move swiftly from one person to another. Avoiding evil and keeping your distance from sinful people can certainly help …as good “mitigating” behavior.

However, Jesus wants to offer a cure! Jesus offers a cure that will save you from sinful people no matter where you are or who you are with. If you have His cure for sin within you then it does not matter how much sin is going on around you.

That cure is the person of Jesus. We know He is that cure because He rose from the dead on that first Easter Sunday, which we celebrate today. His resurrection meant that His way of faith, hope, and love can provide a deep sense of joy now, no matter what is going on, and in your life to come as well.

Evil will always be with you. Sinful people will always find you. There will always be viruses that pop up in the future as well. Sinful people and viruses are threats that come to you from the outside of yourself. Inside you must take in the person of risen Our Lord.

How do you do that?

You follow Jesus each and every day, in His words and deeds. You follow Him. You ask for the same faith, hope, and love that He had.

This contagion may last for a while …yet we know the cure.

Happy Easter!

God Bless!

Fr. Dave

Fr. Dave, thank you for sharing. In these troubling times, it is so heartening to be reminded that while there may not be a cure for Covid-19, there IS a cure for the contagion of sin. This Lent has been one full of sacrifice—both chosen and unchosen—and clinging to faith, hope and love is what’s getting my family through.

May you have a blessed Easter!

Father Dave, thank you for your Tube videos for our Lenten days in 2020. I agree with the McIntyres that perhaps this all happening in Lent and in Easter time might bring people back to God. I hope so.

I spent part of my Lent reading Bishop Fulton Sheen’s book “7 Last words of Jesus on the Cross.” What an amazing writer he was.

A very blessed Easter for you I know it has to be frustrating but soon it will be over and we need to pray for President Trump hearing him say on Good Friday that decision on bringing people back to work will be his biggest responsibility he has ever had,
    God bless you.

I also loved your comparison. This has been a time of reflection and sharing with others. At the apartments where I live people r doing what they can to help where needed. So many times we look at what is in it for me.. I know there r people out there that r looking at it that way but I am seeing where I am at that it isn`t so much that way but what do you need attitude. I hope we can continue that attitude.
Have a real Spirit filled holiday.

You are so right, Father. Jesus has always been the answer for healing, in mind, body and spirit. Our only obligation to obtain that healing is to believe and to ask.

Thank you for your Easter Sunday reflections.
Do you or does anyone in the Dioceses have any idea when we might be able to go back to mass again at our local churches.
