Gospel for May 14 2023 – John 14:15-21
Gospel Reflections for May 14 2023
Be bold!
This is a great Gospel of hope to hear this springtime!
Jesus tells His disciples that He will leave soon, but that the Holy Spirit will also come soon to strengthen them. That is good news they needed to hear!
The early church had serious challenges so they needed this Holy Spirit power. Their culture was either pagan, Jewish, or even against any religion. What does Jesus want His disciples to do in that challenging world?
He sends them boldly out to stand up and courageously live their Catholic faith …and precisely into that very non-Christian world! The Holy Spirit would provide the boldness and courage they needed. That mission to be bold has never changed.
Our world today is rocked by war in Ukraine, shocking mass shootings here, and economic anxiety. That same Holy Spirit will keep us steady and firm in our faith in our time as well.
Jesus promises exactly what we need. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give it to you. Do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid.
There will always be sinful people and sinful world leaders who do evil things and cause much sadness. The peace that Jesus gives is an inner confidence and courage to live our life of love no matter what bad people do. No need for your heart to be troubled!
Spring is also the season when young people boldly stand up and profess their faith in very public ways …even in this crazy world.
Young people happily receive First communion. As Jesus gives Himself to them in the Eucharist, Our Lord invites them to give of themselves in love to those around them. The Holy Spirit will help!
Teenagers courageously receive the Sacrament of Confirmation. They now know that true followers of Jesus always show their faith in their daily behavior no matter what other people do. The Holy Spirit will help!
This is the peace that Our Lord gives that dwells deep inside and ensures our hearts will never be troubled. That is good news indeed!
God Bless!

Thanks Father Dave for reminding us of the great gift we have in the Holy Spirit. Sounds like We are living in times not too removed from early Days of our Faiths beginning. This Sunday being Mothers Day bring to mind the quality of Faith they had in raising us.
Their kindness ,patience and Love set us on our Life Journey.
The Faith and Love they devoted to their Faith in God and care for Neighbor was a good example for. Us to follow.
I wish all a very Special and Happy Mothers Day!

Prayer to the Holy Spirit by Cardinal Mercier “Oh Holy Spirit, soul of my soul, I adore you! Enlighten me, guide me, strengthen me, console me. Tell me what I must do, give me your orders. I promise that I will submit to all you desire of me and I will accept all that you will allow to happen to me. Only let me know your will. Amen.”
